Newcastle United are reportedly considering a swap deal for Jonjo Shelvey with Hammer Andy Carroll moving in the opposite direction.

The unlikely swaps dealr repeated by the Daily Express today was considered the kind of silly story that does the rounds this time of year but further investigation suggests there could be actually something in it.

But a senior Hammers source refused to rubbish the story completely and instead said “I can’t see Newcastle agreeing that deal”

Carroll left Newcastle in January 2011 to join Liverpool for a record transfer fee of the time of £35m, later joining West Ham on loan in 2012 which became permanent in 2013 for £17m on £85,000 per week.  Carroll’s five-year contract comes to an end this summer.

Shelvey joined Newcastle in 2016  on a five-and-a-half-year deal, for a reported fee of £12 million. He has made nine appearances this season for the Magpies.

However, the Hammers would probably find it impossible to do a deal with Newcastle still flirting with the bottom of the table positions.
