Bill Gardner offered his help for half an hour before the Carabao Cup game to collect food and money for those less fortunate.
He was answering a plea from foodbank founder John Ratomski who said on social media “If you fancy volunteering with us for half an hour or before any other game just drop us a line or stop by for a chat from 5 pm”
Earlier this year Bill set the record straight in a new autobiography saying that he wasn’t a “hooligan” or a “gangster” but a “survivor”
Gardner, from Hornchurch, says football saved him from a life of abuse and crime and gave him a family he never had.
In Bill Gardner: The Man, The Myth, The Legend, written with Abe Atchia, he reveals all about men’s mental health, sticking up for your friends and the West Ham football family.
