Angelo Ogbonna’s scan is expected to be carried out today with the club still hopeful that he has suffered only a minor issue.

Assuming any bruising in the area allows,  the scan is expected to be held this afternoon but sources inside the club remain relatively upbeat the problem is not “major.”

A source told ClaretandHugh: “He was in no serious discomfort after the game – he was happy and smiling. There was no need for crutches and the like so we are looking on the bright side.

“He obviously felt something which may or may not have been a hamstring but at this stage we are hoping for the best.”

It’s usually bad news when a player leaves the action before the interval with injury but on this occasion a source revealed: “It was purely precautionary. We remain hopeful.”

Ogbonna has been impressive since his arrival from Juventus at around £8 million and has spoken regularly at how well he has settled in to his new surroundings.

Should he be ruled out for the weekend clash with Manchester City the impressive James Tomkins looks nailed on to retain his place at central defence after switching from right back to cover on Monday night.
