Payet’s giant shirt in the London Stadium was never intended to be a permanent fixture ClaretandHugh understand and its was only there by virtue he was crowned Hammer of the year.

In May last year  the official club website said: “Newly-crowned Hammer of the Year Dimitri Payet is the latest West Ham United hero to adorn a giant shirt on the new Stadium concourse. Payet collected no fewer than five gongs at the Hammers’ 2015/16 Player Awards on Tuesday night and his already-famous No27 shirt has since been installed at the Hammers’ new home. As has been the Club’s commitment to supporters from the outset, West Ham will honour its most famous names throughout the iconic arena, and Payet, virtue of his Hammer of the Year success, will stand alongside a handful of distinguished Hammers heroes from yesteryear.”

Before the news last week the plan was to replace his name with the latest Hammer of year at the end of the season but  that may need to rethought if Payet leaves the club in January. Earlier this week ClaretandHugh ran a poll on whose name should replace Payet’s on the giant shirt. With over 2,000 supporters voting 21% said Paolo DiCanio 20% Dylan Tombides 16% John Lyall  and 13% Tony Cottee. Carlton Cole, Vic Watson, Slaven Bilic, Frank Lampard senior and Alvin Martin made up the remaining votes.

As it stands at the moment Michail Antonio is likely to be crowned Hammer of the year this season but anything can happen with half a season still to go.
