Goalkeeper Roberto has defied some rather pessimistic expectations since taking over from injured No 1, Lukasz Fabianski.

Even repeat viewings of the first goal against Everton allow elements of forgiveness despite him being beaten  at his near post.

With five players inside the box he might have expected better protection but even when the chips were down he appeared to do everything correctly in trying to avert the disaster which saw us go one behind.

He made himself big and spread himself well, yet sadly – as is sometimes the case – there remained a small hole and the team went one down. Truth is the danger should have been averted before it got to that stage

His pre-season did not go down well with many fans and he was almost written off before he had a chance to show what he was all about.

But it now looks as if boss Manuel Pellegrini’s faith in the Spaniard could be rewarded.

Discussing the stopper Pellegini said: “I don’t need for Roberto to make so many saves to demonstrate that he’s a good goalkeeper.

He has a career behind him, we know him perfectly as a goalkeeper, as a professional football player, so as I said before the game I trust him one hundred per cent.”
