Perfect start but the worry lingers on
But unfortunately the worries linger on as the manager continues to remain unclear on his transfer window plans.
On the one hand he is claiming he wants more players whilst passing, hopefully a flippant remark, about not needing them if the team carry on playing as they did at St James’ Park.
He also claims that central defender 17 year old central defender Jamal Baptiste is on his mind as the teenager joins first team training. declaring: “I have 17-year-old centre-half Jamal [Baptiste] who I want involved in the first-team training” before adding but undoubtedly I am going to try and add to the squad.”
That confirms what former academy director Terry Westley months ago that Baptiste is a monster playing in the making with a massive future in front of him.
It is of course hugely encouraging that the academy is thriving with Declan, Ben Johnson, Conor Coventry and Baptiste on the way through.
But it is crystal clear – whatever may be said about the lack of player availability – that we have to sign a striker and new central defender.
Should we not, the worries will continue to cast a shadow over whatever start to the season we achieve with Leicester City the next on our agenda.
Let’s hope – whilst accepting the boss’ words that he won’t sign players for the sake of it – that the two required positions are soon filled with, we understand £50 million available to do so and loan options of course available.
