PL chairmen went for PPV over TV no show

The Pay Per View pricing of £14.95 per game has been set by Sky Sports and BT according football finance expert Kieran Maguire speaking on the Price of Football podcast

Maguire explained that Premier League chairman were given a straight choice between not screening the non-picked games or the pay per view model with the pricing not negotiable.

Premier League clubs are having to pay £330m in compensation to broadcasters over two seasons as a result of the impact of COVID to last’s season schedules despite all games being played.

The domestic broadcasters were concerned that setting the ‘pay per view price’ too cheap would devalue their own offering paid for subscribers while the Premier League were worried about more compensation claims with the current contract.

Sky Sports and BT  paid £4.464bn to show 160 Premier League games a season from 2019/20 until 2021/22.

The Premier League terminated a £564m contract with Chinese broadcaster PPTV over the summer due a missed £160m payment. The top flight league has now agreed a new one-year contract with digital platform Tencent Sports.  The new deal involves both a fee as well as a revenue-sharing agreement based on subscriber numbers.
