Premier League condemns fans protest

The Premier League have condemned the Manchester United fan protest that led to the game against Liverpool being called off on Sunday afternoon.

Supporters gathered in their thousands outside Old Trafford to protest against the Glazer family’s ownership of the club, with a splinter group also congregating outside the Lowry Hotel in Salford, delaying the exit of the team’s bus.

Fans were seen throwing flares and Sky Sports showed a security guard bleeding with a cut to the head after being hit by a missile.

Police said two of their officers were also injured, one receiving a slash to his face from a glass bottle and said their officers were not punched bags for disgruntled fans.

West Ham fans will remember a pitch invasion and crowd disorder in 2018 when a protest against the owners split over to the London Stadium.

Hammers fans were condemned in the media at the time and vilified by the world’s press.

After a lengthy investigation lasting over a year, West Ham fined £100,000 for crowd disturbances by the Football Association for the on-pitch protests.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Manchester United as this is the first  Premier League game ever to be postponed as a result of crowd action.
