Darren Randolph played a major part in the Republic of Ireland scored a major 1-0 victory over Germany last night.

He was thrown into the action when Shay Given limped off just before half time  and went on to keep a clean sheet before setting up the winner for Shane Long from his long kick upfield.

And afterwards he admitted his first Euro 2016 qualifying appearance was one to treasure declaring: . “I wasn’t expecting it.

Speaking to RTE Sport he added:  “I was literally just told I was going on and ran from the changing room out to the side of the pitch.

Before I knew it I was on there playing. The atmosphere at the end was unbelievable. The result is one that’s going to go down in the history books.

“I had a feeling I’d be busy and was just thankful to make the saves. And an assist. My first one. I meant it as well!

“I’ll have to watch it back, I don’t really remember what happened. I’m happy it went to one of our players and it’s a bonus that we scored from it.”
