RSPCA confirm Zouma proceedings

The RSPCA has begun proceedings against Kurt Zouma and his brother Yoan, the organisation has confirmed, per BBC Sport.

The West Ham defender was filmed kicking and slapping his cat by his brother, in a video that was then published to social media.

The RSPCA took the decision to remove Zouma’s cats – he owned two of the animals before the video was published – from his home and began to liaise with Essex Police over the incident.

Kurt has continued to play for West Ham, although his brother Yoan was suspended by Dagenham & Redbridge.

The prosecution will come under the Animal Welfare Act and is set to lead to court proceedings.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “Following a full and thorough investigation, we have started the process of bringing a prosecution against Kurt Zouma and Yoan Zouma under the Animal Welfare Act.

“The two cats continue to be cared for by the RSPCA. We will be in a position to release more information once a court date is confirmed.”

Kurt has already been fined two weeks’ wages by the Hammers, but it remains to be seen if further punishment will be brought by the club in the wake of this development.

West Ham have confirmed that they are aware of the latest development in the RSPCA’s investigation and have issued a short statement.

It added: “Kurt continues to co-operate fully, supported by the club. It is our understanding that Kurt’s cats have been checked by a vet, are in good health and have suffered no physical injuries.

“For legal reasons, neither Kurt or the club will be making any further comment at this time.”
