Robert Snodgrass is heading back to West Ham having sent what sounds like a final farewell message to the Aston Villa fans.

Villa had wanted to sign him permanently but after their devastating play off loss to Fulham at Wembley that is now very unlikely.

And Snodgrass – speaking on Instagram made his disappointment clear after enjoying a top campaign with the club.

He wrote: “Devastated to lose, we tried for you and it wasn’t enough, I am gutted we didn’t achieve our goal, but I am delighted I got the chance to play for this terrific club and thank everybody from fans players and staff from day one making me feel at home.

“Whatever happens I have loved pulling on that jersey and met some great people

Ahead of the game he said: “I came on loan to Aston Villa to be part of something special, to try and help them get back into the Premier League.

“I can’t say it was a straightforward decision, though, because I had a situation where I could only go on loan to a Championship club.

“The owners at West Ham wouldn’t let me go to a Premier League club. There were four or five Championship clubs interested and Aston Villa were 16th or 17th at the time, so it looked as if it would be tough for them to get promotion.

“But I assessed it and thought: ‘If there’s one team that could kick on, it will probably be them.’ And I knew most of the staff here which was a big factor.”
