The winger was fully expected to join the midlanders had they made it into the Premier League last season but was left a loser before returning to the Irons.
The rest – as they say is history – with the Scot making a fine Hammers comeback which saw him make over 30 appearances last season.
And this afternoon he was clearly a keen watcher as the Villa pushed fellow midlanders Derby County aside to finally make it back into the big league.
It was a thrilling game of football and at the end of it the 31 year old wanted to ensure that he didn’t forget the club where he was a big favourite during his time at Villa Park.
And he was quick off the mark with a Twitter message which made it clear to his former colleagues he hadn’t forgotten them.
After former Brentford boss Dean Smith’s men had won the game he said: “Well done to everyone connected with Aston Villa…”
