Ten year anniversary of the great escape

It was ten years ago today that West Ham completed the great escape by avoiding the drop largely thanks to goals from Carlos Tevez. The Hammers surprisingly won seven of their last nine games under Alan Curbishley including that memorable 1-0 win against champions Manchester United at Old Trafford on 13th May 2007.

Carlos Tevez got the all-important goal that day as the Hammers ended up finishing 15th, a feat which seemed almost impossible just two months before.

West Ham were later fined £5million by a Premier League inquiry for breaching rules governing third-party ownership, but controversially no points were deducted and Tevez was permitted to play in the final three games of the season.

The Hammers agreed on an out of court settlement worth £18.1million with Sheffield United in 2009 over Tevez’ role in keeping the Irons in the Premier League in 2007 at the expense of the Blades. This was paid in instalments with the final payment in July 2013.

The Team that day was: Green, Neill, Collins, Ferdinand, McCartney (Spector 28), Benayoun, Reo-Coker, Noble, Boa Morte, Zamora (Harewood 63), Tevez (Mullins 82). Subs Not Used: Walker, Davenport.
