The left back problem that won’t go away

Aaron Cresswell declares that “this one game isn’t going to define our season,” but one wonders whether the performance he produced will define his.

The decision to give him the skipper’s armband is difficult to understand when such as Lukasz Fabianski are available as his consistently below par performances are a really worry.

Quite where it went wrong for the left back is difficult to pinpoint but it has made the position one about which every Hammers fans is justifiably worried.

I can only assume that the manager chose to go with what he considered his best defensive option on that side given it was City but the player is in poor form but those who considered it an incorrect decision were proved correct.

With Arthur Masuaku a better attacking option the other solution would have been Ben Johnson who even playing out of position looked better than Cresswell in pre-season.

Right now Cresswell is giving very little and it’s a problem which should have been solved in the window!

For the record the captain for the day’s comments said little we didn’t already know telling https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2019/august/10-august/cresswell-one-game-wont-define-our-season     “This one game isn’t going to define our season.

“We have another game next week that we need to look forward to, capitalise on and take three points from there.

They were clinical. They’ve had six or seven chances and scored five goals.

“Looking at it from our point of view, we had some good spells but in general it wasn’t good enough.

“It the first half the game was close. Once they got the second and third it was game over. It’s difficult to come back against City, but we will review the game, look at what went wrong and try to put it right next week.”
