West Ham’s Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna will take place behind closed doors after the Austrian government confirmed a lockdown will begin on Monday.

The latest rules in Austria sees a full national lockdown imposed from next week after a previous lockdown only impacted those unvaccinated for covid-19.

The country has one of the lowest vaccination levels in Western Europe combined with soaring case numbers and as a result, there will be no fans present at the match in the Austrian capital on Thursday.

Rapid Vienna believes it will cost them around €1 million in lost ticket revenue. Even with no away fans – already banned – they would have had a capacity of 23,500 they claim.

Meanwhile, in an ironic twist of fate, West Ham supporters will be able to claim refunds for flights and hotels after the Austrian Government crackdown while UEFA has decided the game will still count as an away ban served.
