The Hammers media department made an interesting choice for the first player to interview following pre-season training in Switzerland – Chicharito.

The Mexican of course has admitted that he and the club have agreed that it would be best if he moved on and confirmed he has agents on the case.

Thus it seems odd to hear him discussing the season ahead and the ambitions  the club has in doing everything they can to challenge for Europe.

He was missing from the early squad photos which may have been on account of him having made his position with the club clear.

However, as the club reassembled after the summer break when he explained what had been on the training agenda in the very early stages of pre-season.

He said: It’s great to be back. Tuesday’s was an introduction kind of session, to try to move our legs, even though most of us have been working a little bit before we came here.

“It was good being involved, getting a touch and having a small game at the end too. I think after Wednesday, we will have the harder sessions because we need to build up a very good base so we can get ourselves into a good way physically to allow us to perform.”

Uninvolved in international football for the first summer since 2015 he was delighted to welcome the arrival of his first child.

He said: “”For me, it was the first time in my whole life I’ve had more than three or four weeks as a break, so I enjoyed it a lot.

“We went out with my friends, with [my wife] Sarah too, so we had just a small break and the rest we spent in London waiting for my son to be born. It’s special but I’m not going to say it’s better or worse, or compare it, because in both you have your pros and your cons, you enjoy it, you adapt and adjust yourself to those circumstances, and now I’m here in Switzerland preparing myself to have a good season.”

.He added: “Last season the objectives, the goals were to try and finish in the top six of the table or top seven so we could get into the European spots.

“In the end we couldn’t do it and we finished in mid-table, but the objectives are the same, to finish as high as we can, like I said to try and get in the European competition and get used to that. This club is doing everything they can to achieve that.”

However, despite all the words it remains to be seen whether he will be playing any part given the club’s need to completely reshape the strike force!
