ClaretandHugh understands that West Ham are in the market for a right back to cover Sam Byram before the transfer window closes on Wednesday but are keeping their short list of targets close to their chest.

West Ham were strongly linked with Newcastle’s Darryl Janmaat who joined Watford for £7.5m last week but in reality the Hammers are more likely to look for a cheaper option and maybe a loan for backup to Byram.

At the start of the transfer window we were strongly linked along with Southampton for Lyon right back Jeremy Pied. The free agent opted to join the Saints but injured his knee last week confirming on twitter “I need an operation on the cruciate in my knee”

Earlier in the transfer window, 31 year old Arsenal right back Mathieu Debuchy was linked to a loan to West Ham. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Bordeaux and could move on again this summer, reports claim. Recent reports say Debuchy’s desire to leave the Emirates is unlikely to become reality due to his ongoing calf injury problems.

West Ham are also said to have enquired about Arsenal team mate Calum Chambers for a season long loan but Middlesbrough are said to be very close to agreeing a such a deal for the Arsenal defender, who can play right back or centre back. Whether the Hammers can hijack the deal at the eleventh hour remains unknown.

Wolves right-back Dominic Iorfa is another right back option often linked with Hammers over the summer. The 21 year old England international can also play centre back. A ‘family source’ close to the player is quoted as saying in June: “It’s true that Iorfa is wanted by Southampton, Arsenal, West Ham and Crystal Palace but for obvious reasons he is more comfortable with a move to West Ham where he is most likely to get more playing time.” It is thought Wolves will want at least £7m for the 21-year-old defender. Wolves are reluctant to let him go and West Ham are said to reluctant to pay his full asking price.
