Jack Wilshere has been named as one of the new entrants in the Sunday Times Young Sport Rich List leaving football in ‘Dire Straits’ as he continues to earn money for nothing – apologies to Mark Knofler!.

His wealth is quoted as being £18 million despite him having played just 14 Premier League games for the Hammers since the now clearly foolhardy three year arrival contract handed out by Manulel Pellegrini.

Wlshere numerous injuries make him one of the worst buys at the club in years yet seemingly his wealth simply grows and grows.

So far – come the completion of the season – whenever that might be – Wilshere has picked up close to £10 million for his Hammers under achievement with another £4.8 million due this year.

Nothing should shock us about this game anymore but the reality is this almost does. When you can earn this sort of money at a time when the NHS is stretched to the limits and denied rises of two per cent in the the past you despair.

He and his equally stricken former Arsenal team-mate Danny Welbeck are level on 15th on the list of sports stars aged 30 or under, will be able to afford the medical bills.

The Young Rich List is dominated by footballers with Gareth Bale on top valued at £114m — up £20m.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba (up £13m to total £50m) and City rival Kevin De Bruyne (up £9m to total £34m) are third and fourth.
