It’s the same every time of course …it’s either a rubbish transfer window or it’s brilliant.

Football is so tribal even within the same club that many feel the need to express their disgust or joy – very rarely is there anything in between as the alternatives give everyone the chance to justify their prejudices.

In truth, the window just past was fine…one great defender and a midfield option who is a thoroughly proven Premier Leaguer who will bring much to the table.

Many have made the point about needing a striker and were disappointed that Scott Hogan was allowed to leave for Villa. His was the only name mentioned as a front man and Slav didn’t want him.

Had we still been in a major slump and unable to find the net it might have been worth a punt but with 28 points on the board, Carroll currently fit, Ashley Fletcher available and Sakho on the way back, the manager decided otherwise.

The striker talk started in very bleak times and things changed and as a result presumably the manager’s attitude changed with it – as perhaps did many of ours.

Time will tell if Slav was right or wrong but personally the prospect of spending £14 million in January on a player with no PL experience was always a no no in my book.

Given that and that there was no other striker available I personally have no problem with Slav’s decision given that he believes he may have found the key to keeping Carroll fit on the training pitch.

I can make a better case for the club not signing a right back although given the Fonte reputation – and how young players, notably Nathanial Clyne have improved their game by playing alongside him – I see our boy becoming a better and better player.

It’s a given that January is a very poor time to buy and that only struggling clubs get seriously involvedand believe the two signing we made were very good business.
