West Ham are set to take a huge financial hit on the sale of central defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

The Frenchman joined the Hammers from Nice for £35 million following a loan spell which included an obligation to buy.

Brought in by former Director of Football Tim Steidten, Todibo never really managed to justify that fee during his first season at the London Stadium.

An Expensive Obligation

Initially signed on loan, West Ham were contractually obliged to complete the permanent transfer once the club retained its Premier League status.

Despite a run of good form under Nuno Espírito Santo, Todibo never really established himself as an automatic starter.

His red card at Stamford Bridge proved to be something of a turning point.

From that moment on, he struggled to regain his place in the side.

No Way Back

His substitution in the penultimate game of the season saw him have a very public fallout with Espírito Santo.

It was widely rumoured afterwards that Todibo informed the Hammers head coach he would not play for him again.

With Nuno retained by Daniel Kretinsky, there now appears to be no future for the French defender at West Ham.

Various agents have reportedly been tasked with finding him a new club.

A Significant Loss

Finding a buyer shouldn’t prove too difficult.

After all, Todibo is a former Barcelona player, has been capped twice by France and, on his day, is a more than capable central defender.

Unfortunately, West Ham are unlikely to recover anything like the £35 million they paid.

Whilst the club can afford to demand top dollar for Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville, the same simply can’t be said for Todibo.

No formal bid has yet been made, but one suspects West Ham would do well to receive much more than £20 million for the 26-year-old.

  • Timbo says:

We wasted a fair bit in that era. Add in Fullkrug, Ward Prowse, Cornet, Alvarez and that adds up to more than a pretty ugly penny. But then Kudus and Summerville paid off and how much will Kante be worth in the future? Just got to flush it through now and set ourselves up properly so we don’t make so many mistakes in the future.

  • Vince N says:

The answer is simple. If he refuses to play, he has to make up the deficit. Then he can be on his way

  • Rich says:

Shows some class on the ball, good passing. But poor in the air… Would seem more suited to playing as a deep lying midfielder… Anyway his attitude is very poor. Hope we can get rid of him and not take a massive loss.

  • John Ayris says:

Todibos amortised value is about 26 million, the 35 million was day one value not todays value.

  • Jeeps says:

  • Ian bishop says:

Just sell him and let’s move on
His attitude stinks and I can’t see him at Stoke on a cold , rainy night !!!

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

Todibo is worth what we paid for him, he showed that last season, his mentality is questionable to say the least.

Which is why he falls out with managers, we should be able to get 20-25 million for him and am sure the Italian clubs will be in for him.
