In football, we’re very used to new arrivals saying very little until the i’s are dotted and the t’s crossed, but not in the case of Nils Koppen, it seems.
The FC Copenhagen Director of Football is understood to have agreed terms to become West Ham’s next Director of Recruitment, with his UK work permit application currently going through the system.
However, today he was present at Copenhagen’s training match against Mjällby and was asked directly how much longer he expected to remain at the club.
No Football Clichés
Ordinarily, you’d expect a highly polished, well-rehearsed football cliché along the lines of:
“I’m just focused on today’s match. I work for Copenhagen and won’t be discussing other football clubs.”
Instead, Koppen decided to break with convention.
His response was simply: “I don’t know.”
Hardly the sort of answer you’d expect from somebody planning to stick around.
If anything, it feels like further evidence that his move to West Ham is edging ever closer.
A Key Part Of The New Structure
Koppen is expected to oversee senior player recruitment, leaving Nuno Espírito Santo to concentrate on coaching and tactics.
He’ll become part of a much broader football structure, with Mark Noble expected to continue in his expanded technical role and further appointments likely to follow in the coming weeks.
It certainly feels like West Ham are finally putting the football infrastructure in place that supporters have been crying out for.
Not Long Now
For now, I think it’s simply a case of sitting this one out.
Enjoy the weekend.
Enjoy the World Cup.
And hopefully, things will start moving in the right direction over the next few days.
Exactly when that will be?
Well… much like Nils Koppen… I don’t know.
I wouldn’t read into it, if they were interviewing him while interviewing Nickson there is no way to know if there aren’t other irons in the fire.
