West Ham United and the Fans Advisory Board have released a statement in an effort to stop a chant which began at last weekend’s game against Burnley.

The chant – which I won’t repeat here for obvious reasons – was copied from Manor Solomon’s time at Leeds United.

Sung by some Hammers fans in support of Israeli winger Solomon, whose transfer to the club has caused some supporters to question his signing, the chant contains a line about Palestine.

Considering the sensitive nature of the subject and with potential repercussions from the FA, the club have sought to head off any further action.

West Ham respond to Burnley chant

In a joint statement, West Ham United and the Fans Advisory Board said:

“The Club is aware of an offensive and divisive chant, containing an anti-Palestine message, being sung by a section of away supporters during our opening EFL Championship match at Burnley on Sunday afternoon.

“We understand that singing and chanting is a traditional and deeply-embedded part of the matchday experience. We encourage our supporters to sing loud and proud about their football club and the players wearing the claret and blue shirt – but never in a way that creates division or causes offence among fellow fans.”

The full statement is available via the link above and goes into more detail about the club’s position.

A tricky position for West Ham

This is a tricky position for the club.

Clearly, West Ham wish to support Solomon while also not alienating supporters following a transfer which has generated plenty of debate.

At the same time, they understandably want to discourage anything which could splinter the fanbase or potentially lead to repercussions for the club.

Solomon has already made an immediate impact on the pitch, scoring during the 2-2 Championship draw at Burnley.
