West Ham look to have made a massive error by selling Gianluca Scamacca

It’s disheartening to see just how much West Ham missed the mark with Gianluca Scamacca’s transfer. His performance at Atalanta this season has been nothing short of scintillating, and last night he twisted the knife deeper into West Ham’s hearts by scoring a spectacular goal in the Coppa Italia.

Scamacca was brought to West Ham at the start of last season, but David Moyes struggled to integrate him effectively into the team. Consequently, the striker was sold back to Italy at a significant loss, and he has flourished ever since.

In the Coppa Italia semi-final against Fiorentina, Scamacca levelled the aggregate score with a stunning volley. It was exactly the type of goal that West Ham fans knew he was capable of, yet it offers little solace seeing him achieve such feats for another team.

The Italy international had already fired a shot into the top corner in the first half, only for it to be disallowed due to an earlier foul by Teun Koopmeiners on Lucas Beltran.

However, there was no disputing his second attempt. After Charles De Ketelaere headed a cross towards him, Scamacca let it bounce once before striking an acrobatic volley.

His goal gave Atalanta a 2-1 lead on the night, tying the aggregate at 2-2 in this dramatic Coppa Italia semi-final. Adding to the drama, Fiorentina was reduced to 10 men after Nikola Milenkovic was sent off for fouling Scamacca, who was clear on goal.
