David Moyes was employed by West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold to help rescue the club from Premier League relegation following the departure of Slaven Bilic. He signed a short term contract until the end of that current season with a reported £2m bonus in the event of retaining the clubs Premier League status.
Moyes managed to steer the club to safety at the first attempt but was released at the end of his contract as the club sought more attractive football in the form of Manuel Pellegrini.
Pellegrini was not as successful as the club hoped despite being allowed to break West Ham’s transfer record twice and eventually replaced with Moyes. The returning manager was once again charged with saving the club from relegation, which he did.
At the time of writing Moyes has taken West Ham to consecutive European football campaigns following 6th & 7th place finishes in the Premier League. West Ham reached the semi finals of the UEFA Europa League losing to the eventual winners Frankfurt.
Despite exceeding expectations Moyes has continued to have a fractious relationship with the fanbase, who have found it difficult to warm to his defensive style of play.
At the beginning of the 2022/23 Premier League season Moyes was given £180m transfer budget to spend on players.
