Hammers Europa hopes fade

West Ham United’s hopes for European football have taken a significant hit following a win for Newcastle and a draw for Manchester United. Newcastle’s victory over Sheffield United places them four points ahead of West Ham, whilst also enjoying a game in hand and a superior goal difference. Meanwhile, Manchester United secured a draw against Burnley, leaving them five points clear of West Ham with a game in hand.

These outcomes, coupled with West Ham’s draw against Liverpool at the London Stadium, have nearly extinguished any chance of European competition for the Hammers next season. It is still mathematically possible for us to clinch a Euro spot but it would require a miracle.

Whilst it’s tempting to pin today’s result against Jurgen Klopp’s team as the pivotal moment for West Ham’s struggles, the real culprits have been the matches against teams like Crystal Palace, Sheffield United, Fulham, and Burnley, which have truly cost David Moyes’ side a spot in the Europa Conference League next season.
