Crystal Palace Bio

Crystal Palace Football Club, often simply referred to as Crystal Palace, is a professional football club based in Selhurst, South London, England. The team currently competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. Founded in 1905, Crystal Palace originally played at the famous Crystal Palace Exhibition building, which gave the club its name.

The club’s home since 1924 has been Selhurst Park, a stadium with a capacity of around 25,600. The atmosphere at Selhurst Park is renowned, particularly in the Holmesdale Road End, where the passionate fan group, the Holmesdale Fanatics, is based. This vocal support is a hallmark of Palace’s home games, contributing to the ground’s reputation as a challenging venue for visiting teams.

Crystal Palace’s colors are traditionally red and blue, and they are nicknamed “The Eagles,” a name adopted in the 1970s when the club changed its crest to an eagle, symbolizing ambition and strength. Before this, they were known as “The Glaziers” due to the original Crystal Palace’s extensive use of glass.

The club has experienced varying degrees of success over its history. Although they have never won the top-flight league title, they have been runners-up in the FA Cup twice, most notably in 1990 when they lost to Manchester United in a replay after the initial match ended in a draw. They have also competed in the top tier of English football across several periods, with their most recent promotion to the Premier League coming in 2013.

Managers

In terms of management, Crystal Palace has seen a variety of managers through the years, with some of the more notable ones including Steve Coppell, who managed the team during their famous FA Cup run in 1990, and more recently, Roy Hodgson, who stabilized the club in the Premier League. The current manager, Oliver Glasner has shown in his first two months at Crystal Palace that patience will be key, but things are moving in the right direction

The club has a fierce rivalry with Brighton & Hove Albion, with matches between the two dubbed the “M23 derby,” named after the motorway that connects the areas of the two clubs. This rivalry, somewhat unusual in terms of geographical proximity, stems from contentious matches in the late 1970s and has grown in intensity ever since.

Overall, Crystal Palace remains a beloved and foundational part of the Premier League, known for its passionate support, resilience, and community spirit.
