PM’s speech leaves football in limbo so what next?

We always make a habit on CandH of doing everything possible to keep politics out of our coverage  but the scenario surrounding Operation Restart is clearly affected by Government action and words.

Boris Johnson last night addressed the nation in a pre-recorded TV speech and had not a word to say about football or any other sport re-starting.

There’s a possibility that he may do so when he addresses the Commons later today but given the very marginal relaxation of restrictions he is allowing, it seems a pretty huge leap of the imagination to think a PL return is very high on his agenda.

Given that he will addressing the Commons at the same sort of time as the PL chairmen are discussing their business it seems unlikely we will get any kind of verdict today.

So once again – to use the cliche – expect the can to be kicked even further down the road with the chairmen wanting the League bosses to make a decision who in turn want the government to do it for them.

More likely is an outcome on whether players who are out of contract in June are in fact going to be so.

Given the ifs, buts and general uncertainties of the situation as outlined by the Prime Minister last night it becomes more and more impossible to imagine footballers, masked or otherwise, kicking balls behind closed doors or anywhere else.
