Hammer Andy Carroll has admitted he doesn’t really like watching football and often struggles to identify the names of opposition players.
He told the Daily Mail “I don’t really like watching football… I don’t have it on in my house, unless I have friends over.”
“I was in the helicopter on the way down (to Liverpool) and I had to go to Google to find out who their players were, looking on the phone. I was signing for Liverpool and I didn’t know who my team-mates would be! I knew Stevie (Gerrard) and some of the others but not all of them. “
“My West Ham teammates talk about players and I’m thinking: ‘Who are they talking about? Sometimes the manager puts the opposition team up and I’m thinking: ‘Who is that centre half or where’s he from?’ I try to get involved more these days so I can be involved in banter with the lads or else they hammer me. They think I’m weird.”
I think that is weird! A top footballer on £80-£100k per week should not only know the name of the opposition but also their strengths and weaknesses. Get him in the classroom!!!
Well, he’d get that from scouting reports and coaching, wouldn’t he? Personally, I don’t really care if he doesn’t watch football on a casual basis as long as he’s putting in the work and the effort to prepare for matches.
Thought it was a great read and offered some good insight into the guy. After everything that went on with Payet, it’s nice to read about someone who absolutely loves playing at the club.
I have a similar attitude to Carroll. I hardly watch any football on tv, I don’t have Sky or BT Sports, I don’t know the players of other teams except maybe the very famous ones. My friends all talk about other players that we should sign etc and I don’t have a scoobie who they are on about. I’m a West Ham fan rather than a football fan.
I’m the same, never watch tv football unless it’s us, much prefer listening on the wireless, just like the old days of the first division…
