David Moyes comes in for heavy criticism

David Moyes came in for heavy criticism on social media from West Ham supporters last night who were unhappy with his tactics against 19th place Stoke. Many felt his 5-4-1 formation was too cautious and too negative against such a poor side who faces relegation.

Hammers fans believe Hernandez should have started last night and many have been waiting for a Hernandez/Arnautovic partnership from the start. Others felt that Moyes left the substitutions far too late with Hernandez coming in the 76 minute, Lanzini on 81st minutes and Carroll on the 86 minute mark scoring 4 minutes later.

One Twitter user said “Moyes got it all wrong tonight. We went from a high press attacking set up against Southampton in which we was 3-0 up by half time, to sitting back and not committing men forward against 19th place Stoke”

Moyes is set to receive a contract extension if he guides West Ham to Premier League safety and that has led some Hammers fans to dread another season under Moyes.

  1. It’s that old thing-hindsight- again. If we had gone at them with all guns & given away a goal…. I was thinking before the game that I would be cautious, & although I wanted a win if they were now on 31points this morning with us on 34 I would be very unhappy. OK maybe we could have been more aggressive but I think he had a tricky choice to make & wouldn’t slate him for last night. I think our position has not changed much. A pity but if we can’t get 4 points from 4 games-which ought to do it- we deserve to go.

  2. I was critical of Moyes, first Monday when he heaped so much praise on Hart how good he was, why single out one player? are we trying to get him on the plane to Russia? the moment I read it I thought just wait and see Hart will make an error! Then when the line up was announced last night, the formation? and even how late he left it to make the substitutions, okay we got the draw and we will settle for that!

  3. It’s been a theme under Moyes – players seems under orders not to stray forward.

Still think he deserves a chance next season (provided we do stay up) but want to see improvement in his use of subs (should have been on earlier last night) and also willingness to attack. We do not commit enough players forward – I remember in the Burnley game when Arnautovic did some great work down the right, beat a couple of players and looked to put a cross in only to find he was the only one in the final third. That’s typical of our approach.

Lets hope with that once he has had a pre-season with the players and with a squad he has been able to shape over the summer this will improve next year.

  4. I was never a fan of Moyes’s appointment. With Joe Hart I feel it is completely about trying to get him on the plane to Russia no matter if it costs West Ham their PL status. Moyes needs to reinstate Adrian for the next game. The stoke goal last night was just simply a terrible goalkeeping error that could easily play a part in costing us our PL status. Joe Hart will not be going to Russia except on holidays. I would not be too negative about his team selection as I believe Hernandez, Lanzini and Carroll are not able to play 90 mins. I would possibly have brought on Hernandez a little earlier but I do praise him that he brought on the players in the right order and he took off the right players in the right order. We need a result at Arsenal at the weekend and I would make one change to that team, Adrian in for Hart.

    • Sorry, totally disagree.

To suggest that Moyes would put his own career and reputation in jeopardy, and the success of the club at risk for the interests of one on-loan player going to a tournament seems bizarre to me. He selected Hart because a) his mistake at Burnley could be put down to the toxicity inside the stadium, b) he kept a clean sheet against Southampton, and c) he was our hero against Chelsea. Why would he then drop him??

I agree that she should reinstate Adrian for the next game, but let’s not forget that we also shipped a lot of goals towards the end of Adrian’s latest spell too.

The guy can’t do right for doing wrong. Going into the game, nobody questioned Hart starting. There has to be 11 men out there, and one guy has to make the ultimate call.

I agree with your suggested change for Arsenal. I think the 4-5-1 will suit us in that match. I would also give Lanzini another 20-30 minutes.

  5. The most important thing is we have maintained a 7 point gap on Stoke and Southampton and it is highly unlikely they will bridge that gap now.If one miraculously does i see either Brighton or Hudds going down not us now.Between us we have lambasted the majority of this squad all season as is our right, but we are nearly there now and come the Summer the likes of Hart,Kouyate and a few more i believe will be replaced. Its a season to forget and rebuild around our 2 shining lights this season Arnie and Declan Rice.

    • I agree that a totally new era should be built around Arnie and Rice asap.It could take 2 years or more but a lot of improvement must show through from next season.

  6. Yes. Moyes got it wrong. After 30 minutes Fernandes should have come off. At half time Mario should have been substituted. They both were a liability.
Declan Rice was outstanding the best player on the pitch.
We could have won this game and killed Stoke off if we went for it,. But Moyes tactics of making sure we didn’t lose nearly
    backfired. Lessons to be learnt.

    .

  7. Hart is just awful Mario not worth 10 mil let alone 25 ..we should of played 2 up top and for a game that was supposed to be massive and a cup final the tempo and intensity was rubbish Fernandez should of been hooked at h.t with Mario as well ..but at least Sullivan says that we basically have spent enough in the transfer market and the net spend is a myth ..ha ha ha ha ha what a clown ..on a lighter note at least the gap is still
7 point’s ..who would of thought we would be happy with a 7 point buffer to the bottom of the league ..#nextlevel isgreat.😂😂😂😂

    • True.As i said just happy about the points gap still at 7.Massive changes hopefully in the Summer on and off the pitch and keep the owners well away from the 1st team with a director of football in place.Big war chest in place and some quality additions.Do not think my ticker could take another season like this one and after watching the Hammers for over 40 years thats saying something.Just get over the line and rebuild please for all our sakes and health.

  8. Still cannot believe we started with only one up front against them but we played five across the back. They were without a top class striker and have struggled to score, managing only 15 or so goals in their last 20 league games. It was crying out for two up front, instead we isolated Arnie as we don’t have anyone in midfield with the pace to get up quickly in support. We should have been safe this morning but now the agony drags on.
