Wigan v The Irons – Live Text reporting

Stay on this page for regular updates

Kick off 3pm

5/Early pressure from the Irons but hosts clear their lines

7/ HAMMERS BEHIND: Big cross in from right and Griggs header beats Hart who might have done better 1-0

10/ Wigan find back of net again – thankfully linesman’s flag up

20/  First corner to Wigan and cleared by the Irons – shot from distance then over top

21/ Byram gets clear down left but crosses low into keeper’s arm

28/ Hammers creating very little and Wigan hold whip hand without making plenty of possession count

30/ Ogbonna gets his head to a ball in as Grigg goes in looking for his and Wigan’s second goal

34/ Obiang injured and being stretchered off after falling awkwardly following a midfield challenge – Oxford preparing to come on.

Can we get through any match without an injury  – OXFORD ON

37/ Another important intervention by Ogbonna as Wigan our forward.

We understand it’s a knee problem for Obiang

40/ Wigan still pressing and from corner nice, clearance to Chicharito almost sets him away

44/ Jacobs tries his luck from 22 yards but weak effort and Hart collects

47/ Powell close range drive blocked by Cresswell

48 Martinez win great ball down right – slides in fine cross and after two shots are blocked ball falls to Oxford who slices wide and high

Half time:  1-0: The Hammers have been second best all over the pitch and but for sharper finishing the League One team would be further ahead. However, for all the build up there’s a real lack of anything serious at the business end from the Latics. West Ham started brightly but soon ran out of ideas as the hosts dominated play. Their best chance came near the end of the half with Oxford firing high and wide. Beyond that next to zero in any offensive sense. David Moyes needs to bring the proverbial half time rocket into play.

2nd Half: Mario ON but Masuaku sent off after tjree minutes of second half following spitting incident.

Sorry guys technical problems – look for reports later after game

  1. Absolute rubbish ? 1 strike at goal ? Couldn’t create a loaf of bread in a bakery ? Poor ?
Another injury , doesn’t look good , remember Wigan and Devonshire ? Simply not good enough , young and experience players not doing enough ! Wigan far the better side !
When does the window shut lofl!!! Mario next half maybe!

    • Is Noble also injured ? Was surprised he wasn’t in the squad, now that Masuaku has been sent off looks like a real uphill struggle. I suppose with Obiang now injured we are very light in midfield so the chairmen might have to dig deep and buy Cairney or another player to fill that void. In that case it is better that it has happened now than after the window shuts.

      • Some speculation but I think Moyes was just resting him I hope.
W Obaing out now which looks like for a while have no real holding mid. Rice be best option. Ox is out the door.
And no offense to Hart but send him back we could use wages I’d rather five Trott the opportunity as #2 & not in FA cup anymore Trott is good shot stopper.

They could actually cross the whole team yet we hardly have 1 player who can pkay a decent cross right now.

Guess at least Obiang got injures in tackle but looked bad & we have half our small squad out on injuries. Over sold in summer & poor planning for Jan window.

  2. Lucky to get away with it at Shrewsbury in last round and i could see this coming once the team was announced.Exact copy with not 1 shot on target after 80 mins.Woefully short in midfield again and the owners had better get a couple over the line in the next few days otherwise without our 2 star performers its hard to see where wins are going to come from.

  3. Shocking performance , even with obiang we were more than short 32 ? This is a relegation squad at present ! Masuaku is also out for 3-4 matches ! Spitting is for low life’s! If Powell wanted it he should have give it in a tackle !! 4 players needed but we will not get them !
Moyes should tell Sullivan buy or I’m off ! That was not acceptable , 😈

    • So disgusting! Masuaku could get banned for more then 3 seen other incidents when spit on player lead to 5-7 match bans. Just such a disrespectful disgusting thing to do.
Someone told me Powers might of said something racial but if so would think Masuaku would tell Moyes.

He should be fined by club & the money should go to fund the rest of Isla’s surgery fund.

Same w Hart no offense but doesn’t inspire confidence wonder what Southgate thought I’d play Trott over him good shot stopper but out of Cups anyway. Send him back Use his wages to bring in some pace & creativity.

Looked like we should be asking Wigan for players got out classed they could acruakkt cross the ball too

  4. Window should never be open in the first place ,, its nonsense .
West Ham were never going anywhere in the Cup . With the pressure of Premiership survival and sicknotes littering the gym what do we expect ?! Moyes is Happy the cup run is over ,,, but we’re not .. that’s life . It was obvious from the start with so many soft poofs in cotton wool . West Ham don’t take any cup competition seriously . They are a failure to the fans and the Badge and the shirt . Phuck the lot of e’m .

  5. I lay the blame here completelty at Moyes feet. I don’t mind not playing some of the senior players but ffs to play 6 defenders is an absolute joke. We should have given this game a proper go with a 3-5-2 attacking formation with a creative player in behind the front two. The most promising youngster we have is Quina, he should have started in the 10 role. This obsession with the likes of Burke and Cullen hopefully is over now – good professionals but not ready and may never be PL defenders. West Ham should send both out on loan or sell them. I was never a fan of Moyes appointment and I have still reservations. I will reserve my final judgement on him when I see who we bring in – if he is seriously considering spending 15m on Cairney then I am really worried. If he is considering Deeney I am even more worried. Both too old for me and I believe bith are championship players well in particular Deeney. Moyes is only a couple of bad results away from it all falling flat on him and I for one am not that confident to say it will not happen. I hope I am wrong but the jury is still out for me.

    • Who are these creative/attacking talents that Moyes is supposed to have hidden away? You seriously mean Quina? Sorry, the kid is light-weight in every sense of the word. Watched him played against Arsenal in the League Cup – it was boy against grown men.

  6. What ever happened to the Billy Bonds Scoty Parrker type of midfielders?? Mario reminds me of Feghouli? SON your gonna have to make your presence more felt in the premier league? Or you will fade pretty quickly and the crowd will be on your back and time ain’t on your or our side??? . And to the barrow boys you better start using some of your interest money savings and spend a bit more or sell up !!

    • Dendoncker looks a great player but i believe Moyes is dithering on this deal.Time is running out in the transfer window and we have about 9 players out now after today.Struggling to put out a strong enough 11 to beat Palace now.The young lads are not ready for the step up yet as proven today.Said before we bought Mario that i could not see the difference between him and Feghouli.Unless they are on the verge of completing a couple of deals quickly we will struggle to win these crucial games over the next month unless miracles occur with the injured players.

      • Get him. He wants to leave Anderlecht. The deal could have been completed ten days ago already, but for this bartering and haggling. He is not that expensive, brings muscle and reads the game well. And is a promising player too, for a change from the old farts we usually get.

Then, we need a centre forward. No doubt about that.

      • Henry likes Dendoncker has been admirer for a while DM w good range of passing on both feet & can cover CB. Supposedly board want to but Moyes isn’t sold we lost our only real Holding mid in Obiang which looks like will be a while get him as resale value & wants the move.
Moyes supposedly wants durable players well I like Cairney but has has knee issues all seasons & if going to spend £20m rather get Maddison who half way they season almost on oar w Cairney’s break they season last season w 9 goals & 8 assists. 21yo fit great dribble take ons movement only scores brilliant goals from open play & free kick specialist can play AM CM Wing or Even CF.

We need bodies love to see the Board go big & spend £40m on two talented fit stars which they could be Maddison is PL ready.
.. Dendoncker is physical DM who can pass.

Half our squad of 21 is Injured

Need to make last few days count bc def a chance we could go down.

        .

  7. This line up was like a pre-season friendly squad that you change for another 11 at half time. Sadly on this occasion we couldn’t. Sorry but Burke, Cullen (for all his bravery) will never make it. Oxford very over rated for me, Martinez out of his depth and the rest average at best. As much as I like Arfur spitting had no place in any sport, even though it will hurt us he has to be reprimanded very strongly. Getting sent off when he did completely finished us off. Too early to comment on Mario but doesn’t look strong enough or fit enough to really make a difference anytime soon. DM needs to work miracles to keep us up with what he has fit.

    • I’d sell Massuwaku that is the most disgusting thing you can do to another person hope he never plays for the club again.

    • None of the youngsters had any real support. That is how they grow. You cannot expect teens to carry the weight of the team. Players like Messi only show up once in a while. The only one who showed personality and courage was Ogbonna. The others are flat, so the teens were lost. I still wonder what is happening with Oxford. Looked like the real deal two seasons ago against Arsenal, full of life and confidence, and now seems to have regressed.
      Haksabanovic deserves another go.

      • +1 can’t expect Toni to light it up with no service & he gets grievance but thought did what he could & played well at Shrews Cullwn did too not so much today but feel like ditching back 3 was wrong.
But better to go for IR then be defensive but didn’t press & bet Moyes didn’t want to risk Ginge.

  8. After a few hours of getting over THAT display today I think Mr Moyes it’s time to shift and farm out a few of our “younger players “to toughen up in the lower leagues! And buy a few players that are confident to handle a relegation struggle? Bread and butter players that can take the heat and calm a situation down and act like true pro’s can , in other word’s make us into your old Everton team ? Hard to play against and hard to beat, then the flair will show itself and as it progresses and becomes better we’ll all be happy😁 (dream on Dusty) I know but we’ve got to keep the faith C.O.Y.I ( one day some day ???)

  9. Very worrying what the David’s said to fans outside the stadium ..we need players desperately and with what they said to the fans I think they have no intentional of burying what we need ..its not rumors its fact …p!us Sullivan said shelvey is useless on camera which will be fun to see how he takes that ..I got nothing against them but they won’t take this club forward …yeah they love west hasm but they love lining there pockets more …if they don’t bring in 2\3 more players especially with what happened today we will not survive with this squad ..IMO
