£45 million bid for Chelsea midfielder | West Ham’s transfer window continues to baffle

Image for £45 million bid for Chelsea midfielder | West Ham’s transfer window continues to baffle

Three days ago West Ham apparently walked away from Mateus Fernandes and Southampton owing to the Saints’ lack of desire to sell their player and, of course, their £50 million- plus demand. And who can blame West Ham, for a relegated u21 international, that’s a lot of cash.

With a host of other targets identified this summer within that price range still being available, it seems strange that the Irons are today linked with another bid – rejected again – for a top end talent almost – I’ll say it – out of their league.

Chelsea.news report the rejection of a £45 million bid for Andrey Santos, signed by the Blues for just £13 million in 2023. Puzzling as a whole host of lesser-priced midfield targets which the Hammers could go and buy – who are still available this late in the window – remain untouched. Without rehashing the names again and twisting the knife, Lille OSC midfielder Ngal’ayel Mukau  AND club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika could be on their way to London Stadium for the same £45 million.

So is it West Ham tilting at windmills again, aiming for targets they have no chance of landing instead of looking to bring in real talent who will be an upgrade on what we have?

You’d have to answer ‘yes’. Developments in the next 14 days will show exactly how the West Ham board and management react to what is evidently a crisis but not yet a disaster. Sit on their hands and do nothing and disaster it will certainly become. Spend the money on players who improve the side – which after yesterdays capitulation won’t be difficult – and West Ham might start to move in the right direction. Don’t hold your breath.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

    Phantom Bid
If we have, and don’t fool yourselves we definitely could. Spend 45m on Gueye, Frendrup, Onyedika. Then dig deep and sign Hajdari and Charlie Cresswell

  • Taffyhammer says:

Spending even bigger on your birthday present doesn’t mean they love you any more than they did before. It’s the thought that counts. Not the size of the spend.

    We tried….. again!
We’ve seen it all before haven’t we.

Donald Trump makes more sense than Sullivan

  • Ted says:

    Complete load of nonsense
We needed 2 central midfield players since last season
We haven’t even got one !
    The board are completely clueless

  • Timbo says:

Yesterday may well be the best thing that could have happened to us in. Sullivan will know that the biggest threat to the value of his investment is relegation. I would guess that there will be some serious efforts to upgrade the midfield in the next 2 weeks but we shall see.

The board just dont know what there doing Its much worse than scattergun Imn not going to say anymore because I’ll get myself in trouble Imn losing the will to live with my club

  • Jamesy says:

This is all smoke and mirrors Sullivan again making out that we’ve tried to sign fernandes and now santos? If we have bid £45m for santos then why he hell haven’t w bought Harvey Elliot from Liverpool for £40m? We need a dominant centre half who will organize the defense an attack crosses and clear the ball away from danger. We need two midfielders with engines that compete and can pass the ball to set up attacks. And a young mobile striker or two who have a decent goal scoring record. I think SULLIVAN is playing a dangerous game penny pinching,it will cost him a fortune if west ham are relegated this season. He needs to inject some serious cash NOW !!!

  • Dave Hammer says:

    Spot on.
    This is Sullivan @@@@@@@@@@@@ fans.
We could sign two players, both under 21 for that £ and instantly add pace into the midfield. We won’t though. It will be 29yr old Brownhill on a free

  • Jeeps says:

Why would you blow £45m on one player is he really that good?
The whole of this transfer period has been the same regarding money, is it available or not?
Sold pace man for £55m and expect a replacement for £30m unless really lucky not going to happen.
Not all but many of Potters preferences are still available.
1 player is insufficient need 3 (1 mid Def / 1 mid Attack / 1 pacy young striker).
Guilherme needs to move to mid attack not sit on bench.

  • OLIVER says:

Another faux bid by Sullivan he taking the fans for fools with his lies again

  • TommyD says:

It doesn’t matter what players we bring in. If the manager in charge won’t change the style of play that we have seen across the last 20 PL games, we will be relegated. And in the most depressing fashion possible…

  • John says:

    Going down guys simple as!!!!!

  • Julian Woodhouse says:

We have 2 weeks to avoid disaster Martin, 4 0players needed, 2 CMs, 1 Fwd and 1 CB. The approach as you have so rightly identified beggars belief as does the fact that Potter played none of the younger players yesterday who had done well in Pre-Season and would have been far better than what was our CM. The combination of Sullivans ineptitude and Potter’s not being a good enough manager all finally coming home to roost.

  • SirAlfred says:

Classic Sullivan doing the optics, “showing” ambition for targets he knows we wont get.

This window is likely to come up very short and the cause is the self appointed, DOF

  • Mike J says:

Should’ve just gone to 40m for Fernandez.
