The news from West Ham of another completed deal – the second today – was not the much expected confirmation of a completed transfer for Edson Alvarez.
Seemingly for weeks ‘El Machin’ has been looking to move away after U-turning over staying and fighting for West Ham in the championship, but the announcement from the Hammers was the confirmation that El Hadji Malick Diouf had completed his Brentford move, following James Ward Prowse out of the revolving door at London Stadium today.
Alvarez, by contrast, is stuck in limbo. Having decided on a move to Greek side Olympiacos, the news out of Greece is not positive this afternoon and offers the real prospect of Alvarez’ move falling through with just a couple of days left in the window.
According to roundtable.io :
“West Ham man Edson Alvarez’s potential transfer to Olympiacos could hit a roadblock soon due to [Manager] Jose Luis Mendilibar’s demands to bring a different type of midfielder to the club.
While Olympiacos are offering €8 million as transfer fees plus bonuses, West Ham have set an asking price of €14 million for Alvarez and are not expected to budge any less than that amount.
Therefore, Alvarez remains on Olympiacos’ radar, but they are still undecided on whether to go all-in for his signature since he could prove to be an overload on the defensive midfield department after signing.”
Whether there would still be time to breathe life into the Real Sociedad loan deal that Alvarez reportedly turned down – who can say.
There seems a real possibility that El Machin could be left without a move, high and dry and in something of a stand-off situation at West Ham after his about- turn on continuing to play for the club, but unable to find a side to take him this Autumn.

If Alvarez stays, then Nuno has no option other than to make use of him in the first team squad.
Such an asset has material value. Nuno needs to be professional and realise that value.
