Benny’s must-win match

|

Said Benrahma and his Algeria team-mate simply have to beat the Ivory Coast on Thursday if the winger is to avoid an early return to West Ham!

The defending Africa Cup of Nations champions have been in roundly dreadful form at the start of the competition and were beaten by Equatorial Guinea 1-0 on Sunday night, having previously drawn 0-0 with Sierra Leone.

Those results have left them rock-bottom of Group E and they will face leaders Ivory Coast later this week aware that nothing short of a victory will be enough.

Guinea, though, could throw a wrench into those plans; if they manage to beat Sierra Leone, they will end the group stages with four points, and would likely have a superior goal difference to Algeria too.

It adds up to a pretty disappointing picture for Benrahma, who was not even used as a substitute against Guinea over the weekend.

That result has left the champions staring down the barrel of a humiliating exit, and Ivory Coast will be no pushovers.

They are one of the giants of the competition and have taken four points from their opening two games.

The last meeting between the two sides came in the AFCON quarter-final in 2019 and ended in a 1-1 draw, although Algeria managed to win on penalties.

A repeat of that result would see Benny packing his bags and getting on the first flight back to London!
