It’s official, West Ham have formally announced the signing of Guido Rodríguez, a FIFA World Cup and two-time Copa América champion.
The defensive midfielder joins West Ham on a free transfer following his departure from Real Betis, where he spent four and a half seasons before his contract expired in June.
Rodríguez, who has earned 30 caps for Argentina, began his career with Argentinian giants River Plate. He later achieved success with Club América in Mexico, winning both league and cup titles alongside Edson Álvarez, and lifted the Spanish Copa del Rey trophy with Real Betis under Manuel Pellegrini in 2022.
“I’m very happy to be here,” Rodríguez said with a smile. “Winning the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, as well as the Finalissima and World Cup in 2022, have been career highlights, and joining West Ham is another exciting step. Playing in the Premier League is a dream for every footballer, and I was thrilled when I heard of West Ham’s interest.
“West Ham is a historic club with an exciting project. I believe this is the right club for me at the right time, and I look forward to contributing to our mutual growth. I spoke with Edson [Álvarez] before signing, and we’re both eager to reunite and work together again.
“I am ready to help the team in any way I can. I bring experience, and while I know the Premier League is very physical, I am prepared to work hard to meet the challenge.
“To the fans, I promise to give everything. I’m highly motivated, and I believe that together with the supporters, we can achieve great things. I can’t wait to get started!”
Here’s an idea
People saying can they play together
Alvarez played a lot a CB when at Ajax
Could be a solution no one talked about yet
Alvarez is far too good a midfielder to play Centre half, much like Dec!
I’d be happier to see Tomas Soucek at centre back if he was willing to play there. He may not be the greatest in possession but his work rate, commitment and willingness to put himself in harm’s way mark him him as a proper Hammer. Great in both boxes and does a lot of the hard stuff. Don’t want to see him go. Same for Coufal. If I wanted any of the current squad to be standing next to me when the going got tough it would be those two and Bowen. I accept that Tomas and Vladi may not suit the new style of play but I’d be sorry to see either of them go.
