OFFICIALLY West Ham United‘s board continue to stands firm in public support of their under – fire manager: As David Sullivan’s latest pick for the job, you’d not expect a public admission -again – of yet another poor managerial choice.

However there is growing realisation behind the scenes that Nuno Espirito Santo appears to be on very thin ice as the player respect demanded for his role seeps away – as was evident to anyone watching the Molineux defeat.

Jacob Steinberg’s article in the guardian.com today has a headline that blasts:

“Nuno Espírito Santo is losing support of West Ham squad as morale deteriorates”

And claims: “Multiple sources with knowledge of the situation have described Nuno as distant and uncommunicative on a day-to-day basis, while it is understood that there is frustration over confusing training methods and team selections. Morale is slipping and what is perceived as a lack of clear communication has left some players feeling that they have no way of forcing their way into the Portuguese’s plans

BUT it isn’t just highly respected sports journalists like Jacob Steinberg: Claret and Hugh’s own agent source – close to West Ham’s recent transfer dealings – lifted the lid on the disastrous, ostrich-like inertia gripping the club even after yesterdays dreadful result.

The source, who did not want to be named whilst speaking to Claret and Hugh exclusively this morning,  didn’t mince his words regarding the situation inside the embattled Premier League side’s HQ:

“Nuno should be gone by now: But [the club] just won’t sack him – it’s like everyone wants to be relegated, it is all so strange’.

We have to ask ourselves – with no wins in nine games and having been thrashed by the Premier League’s worst side- how bad does it have to get before West Ham’s board decide to act instead of meekly waving goodbye to the club’s Premier League status.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Again it’s so weird NES doesn’t have his team with him to support and reinforce the process. If things go wrong it’s just him almost ‘against’ all the West Ham people.

  • Taffyhammer says:

Lack of any middle management. No coaching staff to inspire any kind of performance. No encouragement. Nuno can’t do it all on his own.

Get a grip giys the players need to take responsibility. Why do we always blame the manager and not the players or board . It’s not the manager the players need to step up !

  • Ray says:

There is no one single person to blame, they all take some of it and there is enough to go around. From the millionaire owners who know nothing about the game down to the millionaire players who are so gutless they won’t point the finger or take responsibility in any way, on the pitch or off, they are all a disgrace, no exceptions. This is easily the worst version of West Ham United in the 63 years I’ve been following them.

  • Geoff scores six says:

Players these days sre mercenaries who have no real affinity with the clubs they currently play for, and why should they? You can bet your life that they will have a relegation clause in their contracts, enabling them to leave on the cheap…Championship here we come…

  • D.f.butcher says:

The players need to step up Bowen needs to step up as captain , they can’t blame no one but themselves , all that seems to be doing the rounds is pass the buck, what the training grounds needs is a big mirror then they can all look at themselves they need to!

  • Timbo says:

Personally I’m of the view that you can’t consider sacking the guy until he has been given a transfer window to turn it around. Some of his decisions have been strange but he inherited an inadequate squad and should at least be given some credit for getting better performances out of Todibo and the midfield. Yes the wheels came off yesterday and it looks really bad at the moment but if we did somehow manage to get a win on Tuesday with a new striker playing then we are back within a point of Forest. I like Bilic and Carrick but doubt if they can work miracles either.

  • Gazza says:

The players all looked as if they’d given up on the job at hand yesterday. No effort, no pride and gutless right through the team. When that happens, even with 18 games to go, the writing is on the wall that they’ve all accepted their fate and will be going down without a fight unfortunately for us fans.

  • Fredk says:

I accept that Nuno’s record is not good…ditto Potter…ditto Jlo. Seems to be a constant here. Couldn’t be years of mismanagement by any chance? Just blame the manager it’s easier.

  • Jeeps says:

When Nuno joined articles mentioned how much more he communicated with squad than previous managers.
Everything appeared to be running smooth at pre-season matches.
All players were much in favour of him.
Appears something majorly has gone adrift.
As it’s in such disarray perhaps he should give players freedom of the park.
Also he should be questioned on some decisions he makes.
Conversation may help situation if he listens.
At least Leeds only gained 1 point today.

  • Kenny Irons says:

This is no defence of Nuno, but I think the players need to have a long hard look at themselves. It seems every manager we have has “lost the dressing room” .
The players need to be reminded they’re playing for West Ham United, and when they put that famous claret and blue shirt on they put a shift in.
Problem is, so many players so far up their own a**e they don’t give a monkeys.
I don’t care about Nuno, but to sleepwalk to defeat like they did at Molineux was a total disgrace – that is not a protest against Nuno, but a protest against the club and more importantly the fans, who spend a lot of money supporting the club.
So my message to the players is – pull your bloody fingers out !

When does it sink in that going for the best available freebie is not the answer. They are freebies for a reason.

  • Mick bering says:

The whole club is rotten and it comes from the top Back in the 60s 70s 80s we were everybody’s second club Loved and respected for the football we played This is a disgrace now and disrespect to players like Bobby Moore Martin Peter’s Geff Hirst Trevor Brooking to name a few is disgraceful We are a laughing stock and being dragged through the gutter by people running our once great club Shame 9n you all

  • ForReal says:

    Rocking-horse. Brains. Sawdust. Everywhere.

What more needs to be said about the competence of the upper echelons at our club?
