It has been revealed within the last hour that West Ham United have given permission for midfielder Flynn Downes to join Southampton.
The news was broken by Sky Sports transfer correspondent Darmesh Sheth, who revealed that Hammers fan Downes is traveling back from West Ham’s training camp in Austria in order to complete his medical for the South Coast club.
Sheth disclosed the news during his daily transfer update on Sky Sports News: “Flynn Downes, who was on loan from West Ham United last season and was a key member of Southampton’s squad that achieved promotion, is re-joining the club. They were desperate to sign him again on a permanent deal.”
The Sky reporter continued: “I’m told in the last few minutes that Southampton have agreed a deal with West Ham United for the permanent transfer of the midfielder Downes. He’s been given permission to have a medical with Southampton. I’m just waiting on a few other details potentially on this deal, for example, what the fee is; we were talking about a figure in the region of £15 million pounds.”
Early days but looking at today’s match report may already have.a replacement for Downes, Andy Irving.

£18M being reported for Downes is about right. It’s £18M in the kitty to spend on more needed positions.

We all wanted him to do well as he is a Hammers fan. Maybe Moyes didn’t give him enough time to show his true potential. Getting much needed funds in could prove useful depending who we sign. It does give George Earthy and Freddie Potts a chance now with his exit.
Hope Downes does well at Southampton.
Now they have spent money on Downes, this might actually put us in a stronger position to bag KWP.
