West Ham’s Edson Alvarez: Next move will reveal much about his personal ambition

With reports indicating that FC Koln are close to securing a loan deal for West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez, complete with an option to buy, supporters are divided over whether the move represents shrewd business or a costly mistake.

Alvarez has made his desire to leave clear. Yet despite having two years left on his contract and following an underwhelming loan spell at Fenerbahce last season interest in the Mexican international has been minimal.

A switch to the Bundesliga would reunite him with Tim Steidten, offering Alvarez a fresh start and a chance to revive his career. However, the deal hinges on Koln’s ability to cover his current Championship wage of £50,000 per week.

Depending on when the loan begins, West Ham could save several million in wages, but only if Koln agree to make Alvarez their highest‑paid player, narrowly surpassing Luca Waldschmidt. (*source Capology’s estimated wages)

Sky Sports journalist, Florian Pettenburg has already stated that Alvarez will need to accept a reduced salary if he wants the move to go ahead.

Meanwhile, West Ham are quietly hoping a Turkish club comes forward with a permanent offer.

The club fears Alvarez’s value will continue to decline, especially given his persistent injury issues.

There’s also concern he could return next summer with just one year left on his contract and higher wages if West Ham secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Ultimately, this saga may reveal whether Alvarez prioritises footballing ambition or financial security.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

I am getting increasingly frustrated with Nuno. It seems as if he is trying to create a bomb squad. He appears to have no interest in AWB, Fulkrug, Alvarez, Todibo, Kilman Cornet, JWP
These players all cost a lot of money and have contracts. We are now playing in a lower league. He should wipe the slate clean and reintegrate them. That is what man management is all about.

Not sure how this is Nuno’s fault given he inherited those players. JWP issues well documented. BFG, Alvarez, Todibo could all have a row in a phone box. Kilman and Cornet, I mean where do you start with them.

He is not blaming Nuno for the signing, but quite rightly highlighting how bad Nuno treats players he hasn’t signed or wants. He has zero man management skills, seems to hold grudges and really should have been let go at the end of the season. Some of those players are lost causes like Cornet, but there is talent in there that could be utilised next season.

I thought with Sullivan gone things might change, but looks like we will end up with a barrage of bang average signings from Mendes vast book of players who can’t get games elsewhere. At least Traore is gone though
