The lengthy international break has seen West Ham’s squad involved in several days of intensive training after a prolonged holiday.
When Maxwel Cornet was introduced from the bench in the recent behind closed doors friendly against Wycombe, it would have been easy to view the appearance as little more than a run-out for a player on the fringes of the squad.
However, his inclusion may have offered a glimpse into Nuno’s thinking as West Ham continue their Championship campaign on Friday. Nuno’s decision to turn to him at all suggests the winger has not been completely forgotten.

Could Cornet suddenly find himself involved in the Championship campaign?
Cornet has endured a frustrating spell since arriving in east London, with injuries, loans away from the club and inconsistent opportunities preventing him from building any real momentum. West Ham were willing to pay £17 million for his signature four years ago after his standout performances at Burnley.
His ability to operate across the front line may provide something different to many of West Ham’s attacking options. With a demanding schedule ahead and competition for places certain to intensify, squad depth will be crucial. This became evident recently when Manor Solomon only played 20 minutes for Israel versus Republic of Ireland on the back of suggestions he was feeling the impact of relentless games.
Promotion campaigns are rarely achieved with a settled eleven alone, and players who can make an impact from the bench often prove decisive over the course of a season.Reports suggested the club were considering terminating the player’s contract by mutual agreement, but there has been no progress on that front.
As things stand, keeping him for the final year of his deal appears to be the most sensible course of action. For Cornet, the task ahead is straightforward. His versatility on the left flank gives Nuno an additional option, but he must continue to make a strong impression in training and capitalise on any opportunities he is given.
If he can maintain his fitness and regain his confidence, there is every reason to believe he can still make a meaningful contribution and play an important supporting role in Nuno’s plans over the coming months.
No reason not to play him, he is a good player and would be a useful option.
As long as he stays fit can also play left back.
