Former West Ham recruitment consultant Ben Chorley has provided a fascinating insight into the work taking place behind the scenes at the club, offering strong praise for the recruitment operation.

Chorley who previously worked at Southampton and Swindon Town was brought in on a short term contract to work with Nils Koppen.

Writing on LinkedIn, Chorley revealed he spent 11 weeks working alongside West Ham’s Director of Recruitment after being brought in to help improve processes, strengthen communication, advise on transfer valuations and support long-term squad planning.

His reflections paint a picture of a club that has refreshingly spent the last few months laying foundations rather than simply chasing transfer targets.

According to Chorley, one of the biggest achievements was generating record transfer fees for departing players while also convincing key senior players already at the club to buy into the wider project. That internal belief helped the club attract and secure several priority transfer targets.

Perhaps most interestingly for West Ham supporters, Chorley highlighted the recruitment strategy that focused on a mix of proven Premier League performers with successful Championship experience and younger talent with significant European experience.

He revealed that the club brought in Under-23 players who had experience in European competitions and even the Champions League, describing them as assets that could benefit the club for years to come.

Youth development was also a priority. Chorley stated that as many as nine academy players were involved in matchday squads and received opportunities in the first team, underlining the club’s commitment to creating a pathway from the Academy of Football to senior level.

Chorley also stressed that while data is an increasingly important part of modern recruitment, not every quality can be measured by statistics.

“Character and mentality can’t be measured by data,” he wrote, highlighting the importance of trusted football contacts and personal intelligence when assessing potential signings.

Chorley also reserved particular praise for Koppen and several key figures behind the scenes, including Mark Noble, Karim Virani, James Taylor and recruitment analyst Dylan Curnell. He described their work during the transfer window as “hands on and precise” during what was a challenging period for the club.

While supporters will ultimately judge recruitment by results on the pitch, Chorley’s comments offer an encouraging glimpse into the work being carried out behind the scenes.

West Ham have faced criticism over recruitment decisions in recent seasons, yet this latest endorsement suggests the club may finally be building a clearer and more sustainable football strategy under Nils Koppen’s leadership.

With the foundations now in place, let’s hope the benefits become increasingly visible in the months ahead.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.
