The World Cup suddenly took a turn for the worst for one West Ham International last night after a bizarre injury forced his exit on a stretcher and the end of his World Cup tournament.
West Ham’s Tomas Soucek, playing for his Czech national side against Edson Alvarez’ Mexico, was the victim of a bizarre incident when, unchallenged, he went over on his ankle early in the first half and fell to the ground in evident agony.
According to thesun.co.uk,
“Horrific live TV images showed the midfield hardman roll his ankle under him, and drop to the floor in agony.
Players immediately rushed to his aid, and the referee stopped play.
A stretcher was called for instantly by the official.
Medics were seen around him, giving attention to the stricken star.”
Soucek, 31, has something of a reputation amongst Hammers fans of being the indomitable midfielder who has taken battering after battering and always carried on for his club, sometimes bloodied and bandaged, but was carried from the field in evident agony after treatment and looks to have seen the end of his World Cup.

Frequently battered and bloody for both club and country – Tomas Soucek
Early days yet but joint injuries to ankles and knees spark fears of long layoffs and huge rehab: Hammers fans will send him all the Claret and Blue love in the world and keep our fingers crossed that Tornado Tom hasn’t suffered anything too damaging and is back on the pitch again soon.
For the record, Edson Alvarez’ Mexico ran out 3 – 0 winners and have now navigated the group stages with an impressive 100% record.
Take it easy Tom and fingers crossed for you that it’s not too serious. Hope to see him back in the field soon. ⚒️⚒️⚒️
