Confusion Over Kyle Macaulay’s West Ham Status
There was much confusion yesterday surrounding the future of Head of Recruitment Kyle Macaulay, who is still listed on the official West Ham website and was not mentioned in the club’s official statement regarding staff departures.
Indeed, I reported that he had left the club following confirmation from TalkSPORT’s Chief Football Correspondent, Alex Crook.
However, The Sun has since claimed that “he remains in his post for now.”
Sources Suggest He’s Still Set to Leave
Claret & Hugh sources believe Macaulay is still likely to depart.
His arrival in January 2025 was seen as a strategic move to bring structure and long-term planning to a transfer policy that had often been criticised as scattergun. Macaulay was tasked with creating cohesion and identifying players who fit a defined recruitment model.
He played a pivotal role in identifying goal-scoring prodigy Josh Landers, who joined from Hibernian after a successful trial. Since then, the 18-year-old has scored 14 goals in 18 games.
Other players recommended by Macaulay include Soungoutou Magassa, Malick Diouf, and Mateus Fernandes. He was also behind the move for Ezechiel Banzuzi, a powerful 19-year-old midfielder from OH Leuven — although West Ham’s low-ball “take it or leave it” offer saw him move to RB Leipzig instead.
Goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was a recommendation from outgoing goalkeeping coach Casper Ankergren.
A Trusted Ally of Potter
Macaulay’s close links with Graham Potter are well known. The two worked together at Östersunds, Swansea, Brighton, and Chelsea. However, Macaulay remained at Chelsea after Potter’s sacking and continued to play a significant role in their recruitment team — so much so that West Ham had to pay £1 million in compensation to bring him to east London.
His background in performance analysis and player profiling made him a valuable part of West Ham’s recruitment drive, helping to shape a long-term vision built on data and development.
Incoming Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo had limited control over recruitment at Nottingham Forest. He preferred working with a small, tight-knit squad — a philosophy that clashed with Forest’s demand for depth, particularly with European commitments. The disconnect led to tension with Director of Football Edu and owner Evangelos Marinakis.
What Happens if Macaulay Goes?
Should Macaulay leave, many West Ham supporters will wonder what might have been had he stayed and worked alongside the club’s data-driven team led by Max Hahn and Dylan Curnell. His departure raises serious questions over whether his recruitment strategy could have delivered sustained success if given time.
It now appears unlikely that West Ham will name a direct replacement for Macaulay. Instead, recruitment duties may fall to David Sullivan, with occasional input from agent Will Salthouse, insight from the analytics team, and selections from Nuno himself — resulting in a diverse and possibly disjointed blend of transfer targets come January.

The profile of player that Macauley targeted and brought in was good.
I would be happy if he stayed on.
For God’s sake West Ham wake up and smell the coffee. This guy has got what look like some really good players in, players that have not cost the earth and should be challenging or playing first team football at West Ham. Potter like those before him couldn’t or wouldn’t give them much of a chance, same can be said for some the under 21’s squad. Sit him down with the new manager explain what you want and ask, “can you give us this?” It’s only comman sense!
Getting rid of MacAuley will just underline our total lack of a long term transfer strategy. Sullivan is happy to have his own picks whilst also allowing the manager to have their choices. With no consistency in playing style between the managers, you are left with a squad that is never the manager’s choice as, apart from Allerdyce and Moyse no manager has lasted long enough to get anywhere enough time to make it their squad (despite Baroness Brady pathetically claiming that West Ham always give their manager’s time).
Let’s hope Nuno both stays long enough to build the squad he wants AND to integrate the Academy players into the team.
Graham Potter to be new Manchester United manager. You heard it here first.
Just read an article elsewhere that says Macauley’s gone because Nuno only agreed to manage West Ham if he could do the recruitment together with his agent George Mendes. Hard to know who’s got it right these days.
Well that’s what we have heard mate and wrote it last week.
But the Sun and TalkSport are reporting he’s still here.
Reading between the lines I’d imagine his pay-off is slightly more complicated given the manner of his arrival.
Well they’re probably going to sack Mcauley Gonzo, just they haven’t got round to it yet. Soon as Nuno brings his own people in I think he’ll be gone.
