“Isolated, Confused and No Idea” West Ham Massacre Has Sullivan on The Ropes

West Ham hierarchy rocked as departures leave major void

West Ham chairman David Sullivan appeared shell-shocked this afternoon, judging by his correspondence with Claret & Hugh and other outlets.

And it’s not hard to see why.

With Karren Brady leaving the club with immediate effect—her final day was last Wednesday—the impact on both the structure of the club and Sullivan himself has been seismic.

Executive Director Nathan Thompson has also stepped down, Chief Financial Officer Andy Mollett has announced his departure, and Brady’s long-time right-hand Tara Warren exited just weeks ago. Put it all together, and the club’s hierarchy has effectively been torn apart in a matter of days.

Sullivan isolated as scale of situation becomes clear

To say Sullivan is completely alone might be a stretch—his sons, David Jr and Jack, remain on the board—but the loss of four senior figures in such a short space of time is no coincidence.

Tellingly, Sullivan admitted earlier: “A search [starts] today to find the best replacement [for Brady] we can, though a lot depends on the division we are in.”

Those aren’t the words of a man executing a long-term plan—they sound like someone reacting to events as they unfold.

And this isn’t just about replacing a figurehead. This is about filling roles that deal with the day-to-day running of the football club—operations, finance, commercial strategy.

A structure built around Brady now suddenly gone

For years, Sullivan has operated with Brady handling the business and operational side of the club, allowing him to focus more on football matters.

Whether supporters agreed with Brady’s decisions or not (and I didn’t), that structure existed—and it worked in terms of division of responsibility.

Now, it’s gone.

And the reality is, Sullivan isn’t set up to run those aspects of the club on his own. Identifying the right replacement—or replacements—is a completely different challenge to signing players or appointing a manager.

Křetínský influence likely to grow amid uncertainty

This could be where Daniel Křetínský steps in more prominently.

The Czech billionaire is a seasoned businessman and may be better placed to identify suitable candidates to rebuild the executive structure. Despite the club downplaying any shift, it feels increasingly likely that his influence will grow in the coming weeks.

That said, he is not without his own challenges, and questions remain over his broader business dealings and recent scrutiny of the Royal Mail from the government and regulator.

Timing could not be worse for West Ham

The timing of all this is extraordinary.

This is typically one of the busiest periods for a club—season ticket renewals, commercial deals, planning for the next campaign—and yet West Ham are now without key figures who would normally be driving those processes.

It leaves a club already fighting relegation dealing with a boardroom crisis at the same time.

Bigger questions now being asked about ownership

As mentioned previously when Brady’s potential exit first emerged, I have a strong feeling this situation could get worse before it improves.

The scale and speed of these departures raise serious questions about stability at the top of the club.

Brady’s exit, in particular, creates an opportunity for Sullivan to sell-up and leave West Ham, after all, this can’t be fun for him.

But based on everything we’ve seen over the years, that feels unlikely.

What is clear, though, is this: West Ham were not prepared for life without their chief executive—and right now, it shows.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

I started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

I give West Ham opinions and interviews on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus. Former video and content creator for West Ham United back in the days of Upton Park. I was lucky enough to feature in the documentary broadcast on that final wonderful game at the Boleyn when Winston Reid broke Manchester United hearts.

I frequently feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

Sorry Gonzo but unfortunately I don’t see Sully going anywhere.

The fact he’s bought (buying) a portion of the Gold shares suggests he’s in this till death do us part.

The more worrying thing from the Jacob’s article yesterday is that the two clueless mini Sullys becoming more involved.

I can only hope the Kretinsky contingent will tell them to shut the f up and play with their train set.

The timing of Brady’s departure is strange, albeit I don’t know what personal abuse she may have been receiving from fans.
What is even more strange is Sullivan stating the search for a replacement starts today. Brady will have needed to serve a notice period of at least 3 months in most contractual situations. So have we been searching for a replacement for this period already? The Board must have been aware of Brady’s decision as the purchase of the Gold shares, importantly making Kretinsky equal majority shareholder would not have been a knee jerk reaction.
It feels as if there is a bigger plan here which will hopefully become clear soon. I am presuming the plan includedBrady’s departure and that this is not coincidental.

if done right, this is a massive opportunity to build an infrastructure with good people who know how to build a club, run it properly with vision.
this will show if Sullivan has it within himself to pick the right person and step back and let them put it together.
these kind of things happen in big businesses every day, Sullivan must of known this was coming.

I have fully expected us to go down this season ( in fact even had a pre season bet on it ) . To be fair to Nuno he has got some structure and team spirit in the side and we are at least battling to stay up. The only upside to relegation was that I thought it would lead to a regime change. However following disclosures in the last 48 hours this now looks extremely unlikely with Sully and the Kretinsky having increased their shareholding by buying the shares that the Gold family have been trying to sell for several years without success. This leaves us with two principal shareholders owning approx 45% each. No mention of a rights issue even though they are both billionaires which leaves the club extremely short of capital to rebuild the team. In fact it would seem we will have to sell players before we can buy. So we can say goodbye to Fernandes, Summerville, Mavrapanos etc whichever league we are in . The future doesn’t look promising

  • Iron Mike says:

Maybe Sullivan wouldn’t retire, so they’ve left him to it 🤔
His persistent interference finally took the biscuit. It clearly couldn’t wait until the Summer

  • D says:

Let’s hope Sully junior isn’t promoted

  • Morty says:

Don’t the rich have to serve notice periods like the rest of us?

  • Jeeps says:

Looks like rats leaving sinking ship.
As for her replacement try the dole queues.
Sullivan has always portrayed that he knows best we’ll see know.
