Surprising, looking back on the transfers from the Sullivan- Brady era, to discover that amongst the many poor choices, mostly of overpriced, over the hill failures, there are several that have that worked out well financially for West Ham United.
Selling players at a profit used to be virtually unheard of at West Ham. Hence the enormous losses.
However, like Mohammed Kudus’ sale to Spurs before him, the Mateus Fernandes deal has seen West Ham pocket a huge profit, even allowing for Southampton’s sell-on clause.
The negotiations with Leeds United for Crysencio Summerville’s transfer to West Ham were apparently handled by Sullivan as Lopetegui and Steidten made their own ‘picks’ in that dramatic Summer of ’24.

The details of that contract also have some far-reaching implications today, as West Ham, reluctantly, get ready to close out a sale of their Dutch winger.
Unlike the Fernandes deal or even Leeds’ own sale of defender Charlie Cresswell to Toulouse – which had a 15% sell on clause inserted, no such wording, apparently, went into their Summerville deal with West Ham.

A similar 15% sell on clause could have netted Leeds a £6 million-plus payday which, instead, will nestle in West Ham’s bank account if, and when a deal – most likely with AC Roma is finalised this week.
On its own, that six million could easily pay for a summer addition to the Hammers’ Championship squad. Happy days.
Usually only inserted by the selling club if they want a deal and the offer is a little low. Feels like a wasn’t Sullivan great story, just for the sake of it.
I don’t know if you could call it a howler, maybe unfortunate. Leeds have been very compromised by reckless spending in the past and were forced to sell bug names on relegation to the poorer Championship which also regulates finances more strictly than PL.
They were not really in a position to insist on sell on dividends and West Ham knew that.

Don’t ‘sell on’ clauses tend to be on any profit made rather than actual sale price? If so, it wouldn’t be anywhere near £6m.
