Martin O’Neill has been talking to Declan’s Dad

Martin O’Neill believes Declan Rice is likely to need until the end of the year as he struggles with a decision on on  his international future.

The Hammers midfielder has been left out of the  Ireland manager’s immediate plans and the veteran boss insists that England most certainly haven’t won the battle for his services.

O’Neill said: “There’s no change, I’ve been talking to his dad and there’s going to be a decision from him and his family at the end of the year,” said O’Neill.

“I’m always hopeful, there are a lot of stories coming out I don’t think there’s been any change.

“It’s up to the player, he has a lot of things to consider and a lot of things might favour England, but I’m hopeful.

“These issues are far from cut and dry.”

Hugh, do you really think he is struggling to make a decision?

I would say so. He has strong ties to Ireland. Has played u16. u18. U21 and the senior squad.

But not so strong that he has stopped playing for them, in spite of the opportunities they have given him.
