MPs bid to make ‘Mooro’ a Knight

Bobby-MooreMPs are seeking a change in the law in a bid of make Bobby Moore a knight of the realm.

Currently, posthumous awards cannot be made but MPs across the House want to see it happen under a change in the law .

The Mail on Sunday has revealed that  MP Damian Collins will table a parliamentary question on it after the Easter recess. 

Stephen Timms, MP for the constituency where Moore’s West Ham club play, said: ‘The principle of commemoration is a great idea.’

The news comes after the England of 2016 clawed their way back from 2-0 down against Germany to in 3- in Berlin last night.

But Mooro – who died from cancer aged 51 in 1993 after a post-playing career in which he was largely marginalised by the game. The 50th anniversary of the World Cup win is seen as a fitting time to make the award.

FA chairman Greg Dyke said: ‘In the year of the 50th anniversary, Bobby will be seen as a hero’ and Sports Minister Tracey Crouch backs the plan, as does Labour Baroness Tessa Jowell.

Ms Crouch said: “It is a shame that Bobby Moore died without getting the knighthood.’
