West Ham United have announced the appointment of Belgian Nils Koppen as the club’s new director of player recruitment.
Koppen arrives from FC Copenhagen, who were understandably disappointed to lose their technical director, but it would appear he is walking into open arms at West Ham.
The 41-year-old previously worked at Rangers alongside Hammers chief executive Karim Virani, and it’s clear the pair are looking forward to renewing that working relationship.
Koppen Begins Work Immediately
Koppen will oversee all senior player recruitment and begins work immediately, with his first task strengthening the squad ahead of West Ham’s bid to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
Speaking on the official club website, Koppen said:
“I am really pleased to have this fantastic opportunity. The first focus will be the transfer window and identifying the correct players to move us forward. We want to keep the core squad intact.”
A Key Appointment For West Ham
Koppen also took to social media to express his excitement, describing West Ham as an ambitious club and saying he was looking forward to getting started.
The role of director of player recruitment is exactly what it says on the tin, with Koppen taking responsibility for player recruitment rather than the club’s entire football operation.
Clearly, this is excellent news for West Ham and exactly the type of modernisation many supporters have been calling for over a number of years.
With any luck, the appointment will bring an end to the club’s scattergun recruitment policy, which too often relied upon favoured agents and carried far too much influence from the former chairman.
Building Towards The New Season
With Rui Costa Silva expected to arrive shortly as Nuno EspĂrito Santo’s assistant manager, and now Koppen officially in place, it genuinely feels as though the club are beginning to move in the right direction.
What will be absolutely crucial to the success of this appointment is the working relationship between Koppen and Nuno.
Everyone connected with West Ham will be hoping the pair can build a strong partnership as they look to reshape the squad ahead of the new Championship campaign.
