Nuno’s Grin Says It All — “Anything Can Happen” | West Ham Fans Fear the Worst

Reports circulating on X that Edson Álvarez withdrew himself from the squad for the trip to Turf Moor directly contradicted Nuno Espírito Santo’s public explanation that the midfielder had simply picked up a knock. The mixed messaging didn’t go unnoticed, one  commentator even hinted it might be a “transfer knock”, a phrase that will only fuel speculation.

Álvarez did limp off during the Carabao Cup tie against Portsmouth, clearly carrying an issue. And given the midfielder was out of action for 152 days and missed 33 games last season for both Fenerbahçe, and Mexico, it’s entirely plausible that both player and club are being cautious.

With interest bubbling and a valuation to be met, neither side will want to risk an injury that could derail a potential move elsewhere.

Injured or leaving? Edson Alvarez

After the match, a grinning (or was it grimacing?) Nuno was asked directly about Álvarez’s future. His response was telling:

“The transfer window is still open. We have to be ready for anything.”
That “anything” may include more departures. Jean-Clair Todibo has openly stated he will never play for Nuno again, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is actively pushing for a move.
The hope now is that Nuno can stabilise the dressing room and focus on players who genuinely want to push forward. With just several weeks left in the window, the want‑away players may yet get their exits. But Niclas Füllkrug’s loan to Werder Bremen and his subsequent pay cut below his Championship wage might sharpen minds and force a rethink among those considering downing tools.
The biggest challenge remains winning back the supporters. 50,000 season ticket holders renewed after relegation, expecting a team ready to scrap its way back. They’ll need convincing that the squad is united, and above all motivated for the challenge ahead.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

All these excuses about players leaving lacking commitment. Fleming at Burnley is on his way. Did he lack commitment as he tore us to shreds on Sunday? Difference is ours are big time Charlie’s.
Im all for showing Fulkrug, Todibo, AWB and Álvarez the door. But it’s the selling of Dioup, Magassa and Potts that is inexcusable given Kretinsky said the club does not have to sell. So why is the fire sale continuing and why are aren’t they being replaced with young quality?

I’d like to see Álvarez stay and dominate the division. He can even play as a centre back, which could be invaluable.

If Diouf goes, I think we have to keep Wan Bissaka, as Scarles still looks like he may not make the grade and KWP would have to cover LB on his own.

I need convergent Nuno is the right man for the job. He seems to fall out with too many players for my liking and his demeanour is ice cold!
