Just when it seemed that West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui couldn’t come under any more pressure to get results, another commentator has waded in with some explosive comments.

The Spaniard was under the microscope following the Hammers’ poor start to the season, which was intensified by last night’s 5-1 loss away to Liverpool.

Football transfer ITK Fabrizio Romano was the first to fire his warning shot this morning, suggesting that the West Ham hierarchy is running out of patience and demanding immediate results.

Now, The Standard has followed up that story with sensational language, claiming, “Lopetegui’s grace period has expired, excuses have been cashed in, and the time for an upturn in results is now.” The London daily newspaper has traditionally had excellent links with West Ham, so to see them coming out with such forthright comments reveals much about the state of play at the club.

It has become clear that the former Wolves and Real Madrid coach is now on borrowed time at the London Stadium. The club clearly feels that he has been given significant financial backing and would probably be more laid-back if performances had been better. Unfortunately for Lopetegui, poor performance seems to have been matched by poor results, and it would appear that tolerance for him is running thin.

Lopetegui was a mediocre goalkeeper in Spain and as such doesn’t understand nuanced tactics . There’s been basic tactical incompetence in every game so far , which should never happen with a quality coach . Gaping holes in defense , early in a match and the wrong players in the wrong positions . It’s like someones dad running a boys team for the first time . This season has turned into a relegation battle with the Spanish ‘Moyes’ failing as expected by AC Milan fans and Real Madrid who sacked him within 14 games .

When you scrutinize his resume it does not stand up at all well. Looking more like a grifter every game.

  • Alan says:

I think if he doesn’t win either of the next two (Brentford and Ipswich) he’ll be under real pressure going into the international break.

  • Ray says:

I guess the theory here is that the lower you set your sights, the less your disappointment?
What a great guiding principal that is.

J-Lo has lost four games against Champions League opposition and played two away and not lost against mid-table premier league teams. I lost count of how often David Moyes was given extended periods of time to sort out very poor form. At one point it was him or Lampard to be sacked against Everton – it was Lampard that got the chop, despite Everton all over us and we fluked a win. If Sullivan decides to jettison Lopetegui and Steidten, after so little time, then this club has finally lost the plot and we know the truth. We have all been played! We will never get even remotely attractive football under Sullivan ever. He does not want it by design.

    What sensationalist nonsense.
So West Ham have lost to Chelsea, Man City, Villa and now Liverpool away (1 win in 60 years), so ?
Seems like Evening Standard need some sensational headlines to drum up interest in their freebie newspaper.

  • Martin says:

Until David Moyes, Sam Allardyce and Tony Pulis are either safely in managerial jobs or have announced their retirement from all forms of football I’ll be fully behind Lopetegui

  • Legin says:

Yawn…… a significant number of the supporters wanted a change; they’ve got it. The media are stirring the pot, now they should all sit tight and stop boring the rest of us with their insecurities. Change of the magnitude requested takes time, I’ll let you know how it’s going from my point of view in January and I’ll consider staying in the league a successful first season.

    • Coops69 says:

Well said Legin. He was almost certainly not going to hit the ground running. Hardly any of the players know each other and only a couple of the new boys have played premier league before. These things don’t happen overnight. Look at Fergie with Man U. Give him time. Knives are out in the pro-Moyes media. Ignore them until after Xmas.

  • Kip says:

I literally give up ..if .mbapee came to us he would turn to shit also …whatever players or managers come they all just seem to wilt soon as they walk through the west ham doors …tiresome….
