Player Ratings KAA Gent 1 West Ham 1

|

Areola:6 Such a massive improvement in distribution.  Clearly the West Ham defender trust him with the ball when passed back.

Johnson:5 Had a bit of a mix-up with Ogbonna early on but no harm done. Made a good recovery tackle as Gent piled on the pressure in the first half. Too easily side-stepped when Cuypers scored. Gave the ball away too many times.

Ogbonna:6 Used his experience against a quicker opposition who were very direct. Called into action far more frequently than he’d have appreciated. Nutmegged for Gents equaliser.

Aguerd:5 Had a bizarre goal correctly ruled out for handball following a fumble by the Gent goalkeeper. Still looked shell-shocked from the Newcastle game. Out-jumped too many times.

Coufal:7 Positional play was very good but lacks the necessary technique to flourish as a wing back. Tackled well.

Emerson:6 Struggled to get involved and looked shaky in the first half. Got better as the game went on and benefited from the introduction of Benrahma.

Rice:6 Found it difficult to pick up and nullify the Gent attack early on. Picked up the pace eventually and was alert to stop a counter on 45 mins. Crucial double block near the end.

Downes:7 Unfairly punished for an excellent tackle by a very fussy referee. Full of running and determination.

Lanzini:6 Neat and tidy but stifled by the lack of movement around him. Remains West Ham’s best player in possession but didn’t really hurt the opposition.

Bowen:6 Played up front with Ings but it often looked like two individuals rather than a partnership. Put over a string of quality corners and was very alert for Ings goal. Squandered a good chance created by Paqueta.

Ings:6 This is the third formation Ings has played in for West Ham and he initially looked uninvolved. However he was in prime poachers territory as he tapped in from 1 yard to put West Ham into the lead at the end of the first half injury time.

Benrahma: Double substitution by Moyes saw Benrahma replace Ings.

Antonio: 60th min sub for Ings. Very tame shot at the end of the game after Paqueta had released him.

Paqueta: Replaced Downes in the 74th min.  Immediately made a wonderful pass which put Bowen through on goal. Made a real impact, created several chances. Ridiculously Paqueta was West Ham’s best player.

Cresswell: 87th min time-wasting sub for Emerson as Gent besieged Areola’s goal
