Double postponement means West Ham stay second in the League for next three weeks

Thanks to the fixture congestion caused by the good old Carabao Cup, West Ham United will find themselves sitting pretty comfortably in second place in the Championship for the three long weeks of this season’s international break.

Behind Swansea by two points and sitting level with Middlesboro’ on 15, the Hammers are ahead of Wolves in fourth by a solitary point.

After their six nil-destruction of Wrexham, the Hammers stay in second ahead of the ‘Boro’  thanks to their superior goal difference – that and Wolves’ game in hand being twice postponed and now not scheduled to be completed until mid October, hence their lower points tally.

Wanderers’ outstanding league tie should have taken place on September 9th but has been twice rescheduled (much to the annoyance of Portsmouth whose fans who have twice had to cancel travel plans for the outstanding trip) thanks to Carabao Cup fixture clashes.

All of which leaves West Ham second on goal difference; a pretty decent place to be after the inglorious start to the campaign which saw the Irons drop points against first Burnley, Charlton and then Watford before their run of four wins and a draw lifted them up the table.

Battle recommences on 9th October with the home clash – another London derby but infinitely more sane – against Queens Park Rangers at home on Friday evening, for which tickets apparently remain should you feel like a Friday night out under the lights at London stadium.

8 Games down, 38 to go. No wonder they call it the most competitive league in world football. And second will do, for now, just fine.
